Brother James E. Webb
North Carolina '28
U.S. Medal of Freedom Recipient

Few men have brought greater honor to themselves and Acacia Fraternity than James E. Webb, the man whose name the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has chosen to bestow upon its next generation replacement for the Hubble Telescope — The James Webb Space Telescope.

Under his direction as administrator from 1961 to 1968, NASA undertook one of the most important projects in recorded history, that of landing an American on the moon. Brother Webb brought to America's space effort a background which included airtime as a Marine Corps flier and all-around aviation specialist, and public service as Director of the Bureau of the Budget and Undersecretary of State.

Brother Webb was also an assistant to a Congressman, assistant to a state governor, general counsel to the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of the United States, a member of the President's Advisory Committee of Management and a deputy governor of the International Bank and International Monetary Fund. He served industry, law and education as well — each in multiple roles.
