Order of Pythagoras

Eligibility:

  • Initiates, both undergraduate and alumnus. This one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an alumnus and the highest honor for an active undergraduate member.

Nomination:

  • By the Council, an active or alumnus chapter, House Corporation, or the Acacia Fraternity Foundation, in each case by a majority vote of the executive committee or board. Nominations shall be certified by two (2) signatures, at least one of which is an alumnus. For active chapters, this will normally be the Venerable Dean and Chapter Advisor, unless one of these is the nominee.

  • Order of Pythagoras certificates will be presented with an OP pin. Cost of the certificate and pin is $25.00 to be submitted with the nomination. The date used for the certificate will be based on the date the Council approves the

    nomination.

  • Nominations may be made in the following ways:

Criteria:

The award is made for service “beyond the call of duty.”

  • No more than 25 awards will be granted to undergraduates during any year. Chapters may nominate as many brothers as they deem fit to be nominated, with the ultimate decision in the hands of the International Council.

  • Service may be to the general fraternity, an active or alumnus chapter, or House Corporation; or to the Acacia Fraternity Foundation; or to the campus or community provided that the service reflects credit on Acacia because the nominee is recognized as an Acacian.

  • The award may be granted for:

    • single outstanding achievement

    • continuing excellence in a variety of services

    • loyal dedication for an extended number of years

  • The services must have made a significant contribution to the betterment or success of the chapter, corporation, fraternity or be of such nature as to serve as a model and inspiration to others.

If the nomination is based on performance in one or more offices, the performance must exceed that which is expected of any Acacian who accepts an office’s duties...the award is for service ‘beyond duty.’ In each case, the Council will also consider the context in which the nominee rendered service. For example, added weight may be given to service in a new or weak chapter that might not call for special recognition in a chapter that routinely enjoys strong leadership.
